1887 Liberty Nickel. NGC graded Proof 65. Nice untoned coin. Moon-glow bright pearl-gray dancing luster radiates on both sides of this refreshingly original, uncleaned example The imprint that was left by the dies on 1887 Proofs often lacks a certain clarity, one might almost call it mushy, but it is normal for this date; what is most edifying to us as we discuss the coin's merits is that this particular Gem Proof has razor-sharp devices on both sides. Take that as an added bonus if you are acquiring a date set of these attractive Proof nickel five-cent pieces. 2,960 Proofs struck. Pop 151; 45 finer; 41 in 66; 4 in 67. (PCGS # 3885) .

1890 Liberty Nickel. NGC graded Proof 64 Cameo. A few minor obverse spots otherwise would grade PF65. Satin-like mirrors rippling with vibrant luster. The more matte device counterparts stand out nicely against this finish. No toning, just nickel-white color. A smoothed rather than sharp impression was left by the pressure of the dies that struck this, but mainly on some of the stars and also the lower left ear of corn on the wreath. 2,740 Proofs struck. Pop 14; 36 finer. (PCGS # 3888) .

Lot 1133
1893 Liberty Nickel. NGC graded Proof 66 Cameo. A glittering gem with lovely pale blue toning. In truth, this is a simply stunning example, the strike is noteworthy for what is often an indifferently produced issue from 1893. The focal features are all sharply defined, and the luster is full with a richly glowing color, all natural. Vivid and colorful. If you were expecting the design left by the dies to be deficient in robustness, take heart, since this is an exceptional coin and not the usual run-of-the-mill strike. It is, indeed, very bold. 2,195 Proofs struck. Pop 23; 9 finer; 3 in 66 Star; 4 in 67; 2 in 67 Star.

1902 Liberty Nickel. NGC graded Proof 66. A nice untoned example. An unusually high quality coin for the date, this specimen displays riveting lustrous mirror surfaces, is untoned, with great eye-appeal. Not to be overlooked either, the devices that were left by the dies show fine precision due to strong die pressure from the specially prepared Proof dies, but it is often found on 1902 Proofs and therefore should be expected. 1905 Liberty Nickel. NGC graded Proof 65. Flashy untoned coin. Sparkling nickel-fresh surfaces swirl with mirror-deep luster. Of further benefit, everything was struck with meticulous care by the dies -- in the outer margins and on most legends, as well as throughou the key inner design which sometimes is left less than adequate by the imprint of the dies. A couple of minor toning spots on the obverse. 2,152 Proofs struck. Pop 109: 77 finer. (PCGS # 3903) .

1908 Liberty Nickel. PCGS graded Proof 65 Cameo. Light golden toning. The surfaces are a modest toned shade atop the swirling effects caused by the smooth fields and jutting, razor-sharp devices; all with subtle rather than bright luster. 1,620 Proofs struck. Pop 5; 10 finer; 7 in 66; 3 in 67. (PCGS # 83906) .

According to some historians, the most popular song of the year 1908 was "Take Me Out to the Ball Game."

1908 Liberty Nickel. NGC graded Proof 65. Nice fully brilliant gem. One of 1,620 proofs struck. A nickel-bright, fresh original gem example, as crisp and lustrous as when it was first issued. What we see also is substantial detail to the highpoints on this fine strike, with a bold imprint left in all areas by the recoil of the dies. If one had to object to something, it would be some minor flattening on a couple of the arms of the star above Liberty's head, but this would be hypercritical to say the least. Pop 99; 75 finer. 1912 Liberty Nickel. NGC graded Proof 65 Cameo. Mostly untoned with a hint of gold. Both sides display the typical "look" for this later-date Liberty nickel delivery: nicely frosted devices, rolling mirror effects in the field on both sides, with boldly struck devices. A ineffectual imprint is almost never found on Proofs of 1912, as this handsome, bold coin illustrates. A sparkling Gem Cameo. Only 2,220 Proofs struck. Pop 11; 17 finer; 12 in 66; 5 in 67.
